Maryland HIV Statistics Overview

  • On December 31, 2010; Maryland had a total of 29,642 reported adult/adolescent cases living with HIV and AIDS (cases reported by name through December 31, 2011).
  • While Maryland ranks 19th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in total population, in 2010 Maryland was ninth in cumulative number of AIDS cases (37,467 through December 31, 2010) and second among U.S. states and territories in estimated adult/adolescent AIDS diagnosis rate (22.1 diagnoses per 100,000 population during 2010).
  • Baltimore-Towson had the fourth highest estimated adult/adolescent AIDS diagnosis rate of any major metropolitan area, 26.8 diagnoses per 100,000 population during 2010.
  • National estimates suggest that there are approximately 7,500 Marylanders who are HIV positive and are unaware of their status.
